Preschool English Learners Resource Guide: Principles and Practices to Promote Language, Literacy and Learning (Second Edition)
(California Department of Education, 2009)
The Preschool English Learners Resource Guide offers early childhood care and education providers resources to assist in understanding and supporting preschool children who are learning English as a second language. The guide is anchored in research evidence and has been developed around 8 core beliefs, such as “There is an important relationship between language, culture, and learning,” and “Acquiring oral language fluency in English is different from acquiring academic English, the formal language of the school”. In addition, for each of the core beliefs, principles and related implementation practices are offered which help teachers promote language, literacy, and learning for preschool English learners.
